Not Chinese New Year without the lion dance, says Lee

MIRI: The lion dance is part of the Chinese culture and heritage.

“Chinese New Year and other occasions can’t go without the lion dance,” Communication Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said at the opening of a lion dance competition organised by Miri Division Wushu Association here yesterday.

At the function, he dotted the eyes of two new lions belonging to the association.

According to Lee, lions help chase away evil spirits and bring luck and prosperity.

Other communities in the country also invite lion dance troupes to perform during events and functions.

Lee said: “The non-Chinese are showing an interest to learn to become members of the lion troupe. This goes to show the popularity of lion dances.”

“This augurs well for the 1Malaysia spirit which fosters better understanding, unity, harmony and peaceful living among the people in the country,” Lee said. Lee commended Miri Division Wushu Association for promoting and conserving the lion dance and Wushu.

“I believe that holding competitions will raise the standard of the lion dance. We should be proud that Malaysia has attained world standard and that we have created world champions several times,” he added.

Also present were president of Federation of Miri Division Miri Chinese Association, Hii Teck Yun, Permymall assistant general manager Thaddeus Sim and chairman of Miri Division Wushu Association, Tiong Ching Choing.
